Australian Eggs: Open Call for 2025 Innovation Funding Cycle

Opportunity for

  • Research, sustainability professionals and industry partners to deliver solutions and/or research outcomes that align to the Australian Eggs priority areas as identified through industry consultation.

This is a call for projects commencing in 2026/27 financial year.

Opportunity description

Industry challenge

Australian Eggs consults widely with industry stakeholders to identify and understand challenges that negatively impact egg production, hen welfare and business sustainability. We also look for opportunities to validate and promote the nutritional and health value of eggs through further research. Our focus is on securing the services of research groups with the skills to address the challenges identified and have clear pathways to on-farm adoption.

Through a process of consultation Australian Eggs has identified that the following research topics are a priority for the Australian egg industry:

  1. Management of Fowl Cholera in the Egg Industry – Developing Best Practice Solutions
  2. Liver Health related to Keel Bone damage
  3. A nutrition/health/behaviour approach to mitigating feather pecking which is a re-emerging issue.
  4. Bacteriophages as a replacement for antibiotics.
  5. Animal Welfare during EAD Response
  6. Feed solutions to avian influenza mitigation
  7. Microbiome changes affecting the behaviour and welfare of birds.
  8. Review of emissions from compost in free-range systems.
  9. Exploring alternative and sustainable technologies for spent hen disposal in the Australian Egg industry.
  10. The impact of egg consumption on skin health.
  11. The role of eggs to support immune health and wellbeing.
  12. The role of eggs in post-exercise recovery.
  13. Eggs and cognitive function with age.

Every project is designed to deliver real value to industry and current research will filter through to future extension either directly to producers or through information generated for aligned nutritionists, veterinarians or technical service providers. Download the resources below for more information on each research priority.

Current opportunity

Australian Eggs invite all interested researchers and groups to submit a research proposal (RP) using the template provided.

Proposals should focus on practical solutions that can be implemented on-farm or across the supply chain, leading to measurable improvements in productivity, profitability, or resilience. Projects that provide clear pathways for adoption, demonstrate cost-effectiveness, and show potential for long-term benefit to the egg industry will be especially valued. In addition, projects must address clearly defined industry challenges and demonstrate how they will deliver tangible value to the sector. The proposed project can include activities such as experimentation, desktop or other research, feasibility studies, development of training content, extension/dissemination of information, provision of recommendations or assistance and the publication of reports, periodicals, books or papers on the proposed project.

Please note:

  • The proposal should clearly align with research priorities disseminated by Australian Eggs.
  • Each research project is delivered in a 1-5 year timeframe with resources and tools developed throughout shared with farmers and other stakeholders to encourage industry adoption.
  • Innovation investment is measured by applying a Benefit Cost Analysis (BCA) to completed projects. The BCA is based on the Council of Rural Research Development Corporations (CRRDC) Impact Assessment Guidelines and averaging the outcomes.
